-If needed, the exchange below (from another hosting company) will explain the question.
-I know from recent experience how much time can be wasted on this stuff, and would like some idea if your server supports port 587 for legitimate SMTP (plenty of details below).
Thank you very much,
MGH
ps. The host below does not support port 587 (1and1 does, but I've found plenty of other reasons to work on 'removing them from my list of options'.

Hi,
I'm trying to use my desktop e-mail program (instead of hitting the server for each e-mail read).
I need to be able to send legitimate E-mails ('one at a time'). I figured out 'port 587' (so my ISP stopped blocking), but need exact directions for SMTP authentication.
I've wasted a lot of time on this already, and would really like to know how to get it working (easily) ASAP.
Thank You,
Milo

I'm afraid I wasn't able to understand you clearly. Is it possible to provide me with a little bit more information ? What is the port '587' used for ? I don't believe that is the correct SMTP port, if that is what you are trying to set.
Should you have any other questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.

2006-03-11 09:44am by globe4u - Hi Val thanks for the quick reply,
This is from my ISP:
'Send third party e-mail through port 587. This port requires you to authenticate and may require a change to your email client settings."
^^^^^^^^
I used that setting in my E-mail client, and it 'worked', only to the point where I need to know how to set 'SMTP authentication' (or verification) for the hosting account here (mentioned in your c-panel).
^^^^^^^
also from the ISP:
'Note, the server you are connecting to must support this configuration.'
^^^^^^^^^^^^
(Without the details) I'm trying to do something which was very easy to do 5 years ago (but I know Spam is much woarse now).
I just need to reply to e-mails. How?
Thank you very much
Milo
2006-03-11 09:52am by val - Hello Milo,
Thank you for the update. This will ONLY work if your ISP is actually redirecting the 587 port of your connection to the 25th port, which I really doubt, but at least it worth a try.
The authentication information you will need is as follows:
Use SSL: No (should be set not to support SSL)
Username: your@e-mail-account.com (should be changed to a real value)
Password: the password for your@e-mail-account.com
Should you have any other questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.
