I read the book first and like the first Harry Potter book it was a ripping good yarn. It (DVC) was a real page turner that I finished very quickly. The movie was ok but having read the book the suspense aspect was totally lost to me.
As to the question of the 'slanders' of the christian faith, I think Dan Brown has used this work of fiction to make several reasonable points that tend to be forgotten. The question about the authority of the council of naecea is perhaps the best one.
Since we (mostly) stopped burning people at the stake for religious reason there have been others who have tried to raise these matters in public. What I like about the approach that DB has chosen is that we are encouraged to to do our own thinking about these questions..
I am reminded of the saying:-
Guard your thoughts for they become your words
Guard your words for they become your actions
Guard your actions for they become your life.
Guard your life 'cause no one else will..
or someting like that,
Opinions about Da Vincci Code
I thought Tom H was OK 2. But we may be a minority.
It was actually a controversial casting decision at the time..

The problem is that the movie and book were not put out there to totally negate the Christian faith...on the contrary it actually gave you another dynamic to look at. I mean, if Jesus did get married and have a child He still did not commit a sin. He did things in decency and in order. If the Holy Grail was their daughter, fantastic! If the church has been hiding it all these years, well, only God can judge them. I think it was awesome, well put together, and thought provoking. Jesus's sacrifice was not questioned, so I don't know what all the hubbub was about.
