I prefer phpBB but my second best one is SMF (Simple Machines Forum).

For portals, search common mod sites, like for phpBB you can try

I think the forums look way too much like each other, they seem to have a "mold" that everyone is following.

Simple Machines Forum is the best. And Free. So I use SMF always.
