Graphics Request

I have Photoshop CS, just got it actually. I am trying to redo a Php Platnium Theme, anyone who knows Php Nuke knows that the graphics is chopped up so that they load faster. I seem to only know how to lower the contrast so that the images are darker, but I can't make them dark any other way. I would also like to add alot of kool effects to the site aswell but do not know how.
Basically what I am asking is for someone to help me understand Photoshop or recolor my theme for me. Since no one likes PHP Themes, I would prefer to learn how to do these myself. I am going to use the contrast to darken my site for now, if anyone can help me learn Abstract that would be great. Thank you.
