Any suggestions about buying new computer?

I am going to the United States to pursue my Master Degree in 2013.
I want to buy a new computer. Since I am an engineering student, I need to write code and do the simulation.
Pro and Air looks good, but have to be installed two systems.
Any suggestions about buying a usable and economical computer?

If you want to buy a computer, it's better to buy seperate parts.
Like main board, cpu and so on...

Tell me what's your reason to buy a computer? playing games?
