My guess is that linux is better, however since the world runs on windows, along with all good games out there, I use windows....

Linux is much more secure, however most of this world runs on windows. Thus sometimes, one is forced to use the latter.
Windows tends to have too many loopholes. That is one of my major reasons for supporting linux.

Well how long have you got. This is a huge topic.. It all depends on what you want to do and what sort of system you are running.

If you want a web server or any other kind of back office system I would say Linux for security reasons alone. If we are talking basic office functions like web browsing, word processing, spreadsheeting, etc you can still say Linux with Firefox and Openoffice is a great choice with low ownership costs but it is amazing how many people don't.

As for the home user well take me as a typical example. Now I would love to say that I was using Linux But because we have a self interested corporation running the computer desktop world these days most people like me just can't get past windows. For example I tried at various stages to get different version of Linux up on my Dell laptop but there was always some problem or another with the sound card or the firewire port or the usb or TVcard etc etc etc. Back in the windows world things just worked and why? See below.. And even if I did get all the hardware bits and pieces up what software will I use to record and process sounds, play samples and process midi or edit video etc etc etc. There are plenty of alternatives in the windows world. Now why is this .. See below..

The fact of the matter is that said corporation has most of the worlds software developers and all the hardware maker in train and is doing its damdest to keep every other OS out of the business. It is a battle to get anything that will work with any other OS and if its something new forget it. The home computer these days is a commodity being sold by people who know nothing about what they are selling to customers who know even less. good or bad the corporation microsoft has the home computer software market pretty much where it wants it. If you are an enthusiast and are prepared to do some research you might get a linux system to do what you want but be prepared for that that battle..

So there you have it. Linux or Windows in three paragraphs. Not nearly enough to cover the subject. so flame away..
