Can you control DNS and MX records for "co.cc" and "uni.cc" domains? Or is it another service like freedns.afraid.org?

Yes, most are, but some aren't. I had a free 'us.to' domain till I got a .info domain from smokyhosts.

Well, yes, but they're not really not domains at all. uk.to is a domain name, .to being the ccTLD for the Island Kingdom of Tonga, but able to be registered from anywhere by use of the "Tonic" (Tonga Network Information Centre) site, http://www.tonic.to, someone registered "uk.to" and "us.to" and is using the Free DNS service to give out free subdomains. So you can't have for example, both an NS and an MX record, you can only have one kind of record for each subdomain.

There are many reasons NOT TO obtain a free domain.
# it may be a fraud
# you might not hav full control over it
# they will take much more if you want to renew in the second year
# they may not let you transfer the domain
# may not hav option to change DNS
# finally - most of them are not of those to TRUST
