Not always. If it has alot, and I mean ALOT, of detail/colours, then yes the PNG would be larger than the GIF. But that quite rarly happens. I have saved most of my image files as PNG's but I tend to keep GIF backup's (easier to deal with, and open, rather than .PSP files) and my PNG's are usually smaller in file size.

pretty easy just think of it this way the bigger the image the larger the file
