OH GOD
NO ZOMBIES!! PLZ! ARGGHHH! IF I SEE ANOTHER GAME WITH ZOMBIES (besides RE) I'M GOING TO GO INSANE!
If you have C++ expertise and a good physics engine, i suggest putting a grav-gun type thing in.
Just don't go for the serious sam approach >.<

I'd say one of the best tips is to start very small and work your way to something larger.
