What exactly is Php and what does it do?

PHP is Hypertext Pre Pocessor. It is basically a method to make dynamically changable web pages. It is basically equivalent to .net, asp or jsp but the only thing being it is not patented by any corporation and is open source managed by community at http://www.php.net Check out that site for more details.

PHP is a server side language that is very flexible in commands. It's not exactly like 'commands' but more on text-type language. The best thing about this is it is server-sided.
Server-side means that it is loaded from the server but not from the client(you). However, because it is server-sided, the server must be able to handle large amount of request and reply promptly.
