Less RAM more SPEED Firefox 3.6

Post by panakj »

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for it’s cache feature

Try this:

1) Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the address bar in the browser.
2) Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers”
3) Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)

Increase the Speed in Which Firefox loads pages

1) Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit Enter. (Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)

2) Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.

3) Lastly, right-**** anywhere and select New->Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“;.(Zero)

This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now.

Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right **** –> New– >Interger or String

“network.dns.disableIPv6”: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5”; (Five)
“ui.****”: set “0”; (Zero)

Reduce RAM usage to 10mb when Firefox is minimized

This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:

1) Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2) Right **** in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3) In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4) Now select True and then press Enter.
5) Restart Firefox.

These simple tweaks will make your web browsing with Mozilla Firefox at least twice as fast and it's a pretty simple thing anybody can do.

Enjoy and let us know if these steps helped you!;)

OK Im back with a review.

So i tested all of these tricks separately and also all at the same time.
I have run these tests on 3 different pc's

pc1: 2.86ghz and dual core/ 3.47 gig ram
pc2: 2.76ghz lintel Pentium 3/ 2.67 gig ram
pc3: 1.87ghz Pentium 2 / 746mb ram

Firefox: 3.6.6 Standard with Marcos
(all info is avg between pc's, all running 5 tabs open. navigating 5 pages constant
within 5 sites)

Trick 1:
browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers

Normal+
27.12cpu
21 threads
Tweak+
10.12cps
24 threads

This trick decreases the cpu usage but adds more threads to make up for the loss in cpu. This proved to be a slight issue with PC3.

Trick 2:
Increase the Speed

Normal+
Marco page load avg: 4.53s

Tweak+
Macro Page load avg: 3.32s

This Only increased the load time on PC1 and PC2

Trick 3:
Reduce RAM

Normal+
commit: 80,000kb
working: 103,056kb
share: 22,876kb
private: 96,000kb

Tweak+
Commit: 66,000kb
working: 87,452kb
share: 19,788kb
private: 63,000kb

This Proved to decrease the memory usage by 20,000kb for each sector.

All Al round Tweaks:
All tricks have been used for these last numbers

Firefox open+
115,104kb- commit
126,848kb- Working
21,540kb- Share
82,760kb- Private

Page Load Time+
4.62s

Firefox minimized:

92,000kb- Commit
102,572kb-Working
21,548kb- Share
82,736kb- Private

All tricks working together seems to cancel each other out. There isnt much of a difference.

-----------------

As in general I believe that these are not really worth it. I found that for 90% of these tricks when you restart firefox the settings return to default.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I disagree that these tricks are not really worth it. I have a computer, 800Hmz speed which uses firefox. When i tried those tricks it greatly improved the browser which allowed me to do quite a lot than what I had before. Also the modificiations do not reset when you restart firefox, I have the new firefox 3.6 update and the modification settings still remain.

Overall I think that people should at least add the trim_maximise modification to their firefox settings as this helps with older computers.

P.S Another trick which should be added to the list is the flash blocker, this makes it so when the browser loads, it blocks off the flash stuff though increasing the speed of which the browsers load

What I ment by not worth it is I tested these trick and tweaks under 3 system profiles and under extreme stress.

AS for the average user they may enhance the speed but with me i have 10-20 tabs in Firefox opena t a time as well as photoshop , ftp manager, remote desktop, email clients, and support clients.
and more..

So on a web developers standards this is kind of useless.
