Firefox 3.1: Need Private Browsing Mode ?

Post by hartap »

Private Browsing allows you to surf the web without recording a history of the sites visited and without saving any information about the session. If Firefox is to be installed on a public computer, then starting it in Private Browsing mode is a must.

1. Open Firefox 3.1.

2. In the Location Bar, input about:config.

3. **** to get past the warning message that appears.

4. Locate the Preference Name browser.privatebrowsing.autostart.

5. Double-**** the preference and change the value to true.

The next time you open Firefox, it will be in Private Browsing mode.

hey thanks. I'll use it if the need arise. You know anyway to do that in IE7?

Private browsing sure is a good thing for those on a shared computer but does it help to hide all the footprints if you are in a network? Like the list of web sites visited not going to the server?

Thank you, nice tips. Though I think it should be an option to open a new browser when already running FF like in IE and Chrome.

Scorcher, no it won't help keep the sites you visit secret. :P Most common networks generally have a proxy server (or some form of software) that logs sites visited. Sites are recorded remotely, not locally basically, thus this configuration will not help.

Scorcher, IE7 does not have Private Browsing mode, but if you update to IE8, you get "InPrivate Browsing" which is the same.
