Zipping movies and pictures

Post by thetarget »

Hey guys, any of you guys here tried to squeeze some bytes out of archive videos or pictures here?

I tried zipping 10GB of movie and the zip file is 10.1GB... Tried 7-zip, Winzip Pro, WinRar.

Any luck for you guys?

Usually multimedia files do not get compressed with .zip algorithm.

That's the case I'm afraid, but if you don't mond long extract times you could try UHARC it can compress from 180mb to over 1gb

Have you tried making a tarball? (.tar) I think that's good compresion, but also UHARC is very good compression.

Is it related the file format of your file? Some file format, says Jpeg and rmvb, they are already highly compressed so it will not with a big effect on sizes by zipping it.
