How do you do graphics design?

Hi.

Just wondering how people get started to create graphics. Is just about all the work done here made by Photoshop or are there other programs that can do it as well? I have freeware called the GIMP and I think I might have grasped some of the basics but I can't see how I could use it to create such amazing graphics as are always on display here.

Can someone explain to me, or point to a tutorial how to create such things?

there are many program but at this stie photoshop is the best. also if you want a program that can do all the thing photoshop can then your gonna have to pay lol. there are no freeware programs in witch can match or come close to the powere of photoshop.

cs 2 or just cs. also fireworks is really good but it costs money so i maintain my point.
