I don't think your suggestion is "demanding" in nature, but you must also note that every site functionality cannot be added with benefit of one side in mind.
It needs to satisfy both the ends, the user and the site admin/developer.

I guess the directory idea can't live up to your expectations in terms of popularity, coz there are too many sites around that provide similar functionality.

Although, the second one can pe designed and promoted to see if its a viable idea.

I would personally prefer Cubecart coz I have seen my friend have security issues with Zencart, although it had a lot of functionality that other shopping cart softwares didn't have at that time.
