You could use wordpress as your platform and go to Smashing Magazine and look for a theme there design for portfolios. Just edit the theme to suit you

Tip : Don't overcrowd the pages with unnecessary things. Install only the things you think will benefit the site and the users. Making the site too crowdy will drive visitors away.

actually javascript aren't that power, it could not compete with those modern kinds of programming. It's quite old also.
